Phenolic
Description:
Phenolic is a composite resin material made by combining phenol and aldehyde. It is a rigid material used in hundreds of critical and high precision applications. To transform the phenol mixture into a laminated phenolic sheet, paper, glass or cloth is impregnated with the synthetic mixture, then layered and pressed together using heat and pressure. Because of that heat and pressure, polymerization occurs and the resin reacts with the paper or cloth, to produce a hard, dense sheet of phenolic plastic that is an extremely durable and tough material. But, for most people on our site, we can skip to the fact that it’s a very popularmaterial for knife handles!
The reason for this is that phenolic laminates come in a variety of colors andvtextures but are also incredibly lightweight and have high water dissipation alongvwith low water absorption. They can withstand a wide range of temperatures and humidity, and their physical toughness resists abrasion, friction, and impact and material fatigue. They also resist corrosion from common chemicals.
Depending on the look you are after, the layers of laminations are usually of cellulose paper, cotton fabrics, burlap, synthetic yarn fabrics, or unwoven fabrics. When heat and pressure are applied to the layers, a chemical reaction (polymerization) transforms the layers into a high-pressure thermosetting industrial laminated phenolic sheet.
PAPER REINFORCED PHENOLIC
CANVAS REINFORCED PHENOLIC
LINEN REINFORCED PHENOLIC
PAPER REINFORCED PHENOLIC
is a paper-based laminate with phenolic resin content. Paper Reinforced Phenolic is also the most cost effective industrial laminate but is prone to chipping and absorbs the most moisture.
CLOTH REINFORCED PHENOLIC
comes in two different fabric options; canvas and linen. Cloth Reinforced Phenolic is used in applications that require greater mechanical strength than paper laminate. Canvas has better mechanical strength; however, linen has a finer texture and is easier to machine. Both are more chip-resistant than paper phenolic.
We offer phenolic rod in canvas, linen and paper and scales, sheets and slabs in canvas, burlap, linen and paper.
