Micarta (a trade name for all laminate materials, created by Westinghouse, now owned by Norplex):
Micarta, in general, is popular due to its high durability and comfort. It is easy to grip, is heat- and water-resistant, and does not chip, rust, or degrade over time.This alone makes it the preferred choice of several industries compared to that of other materials such as wood, acrylic, thermoplastic or metal. Micarta is also extremely resistant to stress, vibration, and corrosive chemicals. Micarta is classified as a thermo-set laminate. Meaning: once formed, it cannot be melted down and reformed. Further application of heat beyond the limits of the material will result in charring and degradation.

Linen Micarta
Norplex-Micarta manufactures UltreX linen Micarta. UltreX Composites take the process of blending linen substrates with phenolic resins to form a durable yet beautiful product. Compared to canvas, linen produces a finer finish compared to the gradient finish produced by canvas. Regardless of which Micarta material you prefer, all will yield very similar results. Micarta, in general, is very durable and generates a unique, stylish look. Micarta is the perfect material used for creating durable handles seen on products such as knives and gun grips. It provides excellent grip and comfort for the user. One notable difference between linen Micarta compared to other materials is it is easier to cut and machine.

Process
They impregnate various linen substrates with different resin formulations, then take these materials and press them under high heat and pressure to mold and form them. This amazing material provides more than just comfort and durability.Micarta does not rust and is resistant to scratches and chipping over time.Micarta also provides extreme resilience to heat, water, stress, vibration, and various corrosive chemicals. Essentially, once Micarta has been formed, it cannot be reheated and reformed, as the material has already set. Canvas Micarta
Norplex-Micarta manufactures UltreX canvas Micarta. Micarta is a widely used laminate commonly seen in industries pertaining to the knife and gun market. It has increasingly grown in popularity due to its durability and easy-to-grip features. Canvas Micarta’s substrate fibers are larger and can be significantly larger when using burlap compared to linen Micarta products. Canvas laminated sheets consist of thermosetting resins blended with canvas cloth. The combined materials are then pressed together under high heat and pressure. The end result is a thick, durable material that can be fabricated into various shapes and sizes, commonly seen in knife handles and gun grips. This easy-to-fabricate material can be cut, drilled, taped, and machined into virtually any shape you deem necessary. It is precisely for this reason Micarta is so popular in the manufacturing industry.
