Raffir High-grade stabilized wood is a core product of the Raffir company. They have spent more than 15 years developing and producing it, with the continued goal to make it better, stronger and more beautiful. Raffir wood is a carefully selected fine-grained natural wood stabilized with their unique high-pressure resin treatment. After this process the material is stronger, more durable and has deeper grain patterns. Raffir Composites are plant fibers or metals cast in a deep-colored 3D resin matrix.

Raffir Wood is naturally beautiful wood that is saturated to the core with a plastic resin. They call this process “stabilization” (hence the name.) The end result has all the beautiful tones and grain patterns of the untreated wood, but they are intensified and sometimes altered - in the case of added dyes. And while this produces a material that is aesthetically beautiful, the process also creates mechanical advantages from the strong resin. Stabilized wood absorbs very little water, and will have very low swelling and shrinkage at different humidity levels. It will not warp and crack as easily as untreated wood. It is also heavier, harder and more durable than normal wood. Finally, it polishes well and the resin brings out a deeper and more dimensional grain structure.

Normally, wood is stabilized with a vacuum process. Raffir uses a combination of vacuum and very high pressure to achieve a superior material. They have also developed their own acrylic resin formula for this process. As a result, Raffir Wood has high durability and can obtain a high gloss finish with polishing. The material has a smooth surface without porosities and needs no other finishing other than some fine sanding and polishing.

Variation and properties They carefully select wood species they feel are best for this process. This is both in terms of beauty and physical properties. Their standard selection covers: poplar burl, flamed poplar, spalted beech and platan. They also stabilize limited series of woods, such as bog oak and curly dark chestnut. All wood species used come from sustainable forests within the EU.

Raffir Wood also comes in 10 different colors by adding dye to the resin. Their standard color selection is: black, blue, brown, red, yellow, purple, lime, green, orange and natural. The colors enable an artisan to have more of a tonal range with regards to boldness and expression.
