Description:
Chalking the tip of your pool cue is an iconic act in playing pool. But if you’re fairly new to the game of pool you may have a few questions about it.Chalking your pool cue simply adds friction to the tip. This friction is essential to making good contact with the cue ball. Think of it as gripping the ball more. Without it, making good contact with the cue ball is much more difficult and miscues can often occur. Miscues happen you strike the cue ball too far off center. This results in the cue ball deflecting, or slipping off your cue with very little energy or accuracy instead of moving the ball in the direction of your target. Also, by taking the time to chalk your cue before every shot, you can drastically reduce the chance of miscuing. This also means you have better control of the cue ball when using English. If you play with a lot of English, you know how important it is to make contact with the cue ball exactly where you want it.
Pool balls are perfectly round and incredibly smooth. Regardless of the size and hardness of the tip you use, it can still be a challenge to have the amount of friction you are looking for. Chalk can make the difference in just about every shot.
How to Chalk Up Properly?
When chalking your cue you should brush the cube of chalk across the tip of your cue, lightly and evenly. You want to cover it completely. You should be sure to chalk the face and sides of your tip - any surface that could come in contact with the cue ball. But don’t do this by constantly twisting and turning the cue into the chalk.
Chalking your cue this way will help ensure even coverage where twisting and grinding your tip into the chalk will most likely create inconsistent coverage with it being too heavy in some areas and too light in others.
If you have a soft tip it will hold more chalk. Hard tips, on the other hand, do not hold chalk as well and may require a bit more at each application. So, the kind of tip you have will also determine your application.
How Often Should I Chalk Up
You should avoid a miscue any chance you get. Every time you strike the ball, some chalk is lost. You don’t know from where or how much. Most players agree that it’s good to chalk up before every shot. This is the only way to ensure the best chance of not miscuing. Especially if you plan to use some English on a shot.
