Birdseye Maple (Acer saccharum) — Wood Blanks

Birdseye maple is a rare figure found in North American hard maple, where small, swirling "eyes" break up the straight grain and give the wood a deep, three-dimensional look under finish. It machines and wears like any hard maple — dense, stable, and shock-resistant — so you get standout looks without giving up performance. Popular for turning, knife handles, pen blanks, inlays, and fine woodworking.

Choosing Your Birdseye Maple (grading done by supplier)

  • A Grade: Clean Birdseye figure with the classic light maple tone — a solid choice for everyday projects.
  • AA Grade: Denser, more consistent eye figure plus quilting for a layered, rippled effect. Choose AA for showpiece and high-end work.
  • Square vs. Dowel: Squares give you room to cut, resaw, or turn your own profile. Dowels come pre-turned to 1.375" — ready for the lathe with less waste and setup.
