Royal Ebony separates itself from black Gaboon Ebony with extreme color variations within the heartwood. It looks closer to Black & White Ebony or Macassar Ebony with its unique color patterns. Royal Ebony is a rigid, dense, and heavy wood with a fine texture. It is excellent for wood turning and carving, inlays, tool and knife handles, door knobs, piano and organ keys, and instrument wood. Royal Ebony takes an excellent polish. It has a fine, even texture with a very high natural luster. It can be a bit of a challenge to work due to its extremely high density. Also, because of that, it can have a dulling effect on cutters. Due to its high oil content, it can sometimes present problems with gluing. It finishes nicely and polishes to a high luster.
